Our Helping Hand, Rick

Rick Provines

In August 2013 Rick Provines came to the Mission broke, fearful, and without hope. He’d owned a successful remodeling business near Hobbs, NM for years; but an identity thief wiped out his 401k, checking and savings accounts. He lost everything.

He quickly discovered no one would hire him because “he was too old”. After months of wandering, a member of the VFW in Alamogordo suggested he come to the Mission. He bought Rick a bus ticket to Las Cruces and gave him $20. That has made all the difference.

At first Rick worked in the Laundry, even though he had other skills. “Success always comes to those who are selfless servants,” he offers. “I know God brought me here. At the Mission I’ve found hope and an atmosphere of encouragement to help myself.”

He was right. For well over a year now, Rick has been the Mission’s Maintenance Manager. In this full-time job, he’s responsible for all building and grounds maintenance including that at the Clothing Room and Thrift Store on Solano.

“As a carpenter, painter, plumber, brick mason, electrician, and glaser, Rick has become indispensable”, said Bob Jeska, Executive Director. “He is a quiet and thoughtful soul who is a living testament to what the Mission does for people. We’re blessed to have him on staff.”
